What do responsible business, audit regulation, and happiness have in common?
Very little, except that they all feature in my wide-ranging discussion with portfolio manager and playwright Ben Yeoh from RBC. We talk about the benefits of purpose and the risk of corporate puff. We touch on audit reform and the challenges of regulation. We discuss the importance of democratic process and the role of government versus business. Carbon taxes, diversity targets, Milton Friedman, and financial incentives. On a personal note we talk about the challenges of achieving a personal net-zero and the importance of understanding what makes us happy.
Executive pay: sinner or saint?
I spoke to Alissa Kole of the GOVERN Center about executive pay. We talk about how different governance approaches and cultures around the world have led to different approaches to executive pay. We also discuss the emerging trend to link executive pay to ESG, and whether this is a good idea. We discuss pay gap disclosure as a way to tackle inequality, and finally suggest that perhaps we sometimes expect too much of executive pay.
